Verse of the day:
He isn’t here! He is risen from the dead! Remember what he told you back in Galilee, that the Son of Man must be betrayed into the hands of sinful men and be crucified, and that he would rise again on the third day. (Luke 24:6-7)
One of my greatest points of self reflection and inspiration was when I was a teenager on a trip to the National Fine Arts competition with Pastor Shawn in Charlotte, North Carolina. During some down time he took around 50 of us students to a nearby cemetery. He explained to us that on every tombstone was 2 sets of numbers; the deceased’s year of birth and the year they died. In between those numbers was a dash, and that dash represents their entire life. Everything they have ever done, their career, the children they raised, their impact on others. Everything done while their time on earth is summed up with a dash. He finished with the challenge, what do you want your dash to be? How do you want to be remembered when you’re dead and gone? And with that, he gave us time to walk throughout the cemetery and talk to God about our lives and futures. I reflected and prayed on what incredible things God had in store for me, how I was going to make a difference in this world, and even to how I would die. It scared me a little, being a teenager and thinking through life up to my death. But it was also an incredible time for God to speak to me and show me his presence.
In today’s reading 3 women were on their way to Jesus’ tomb to mourn his death and prepare his body with spices. But when they arrived, the stone covering the tomb was gone, which in their mind could only leave them to assume the worst - someone had come and stolen his body. Imagine with me, going to the tomb of a loved one only to discover that it had been dug up and their casket was wide open. Pretty crazy, scary, and overwhelming!
Suddenly 2 angels appeared and assured the women, Jesus is alive! The angels of course knew the truth, but the women stood their dumbstruck. The angels reminded them, he’s alive, JUST as he said he would be! It’s pretty near impossible for us to predict how we’re going to die, but Jesus said over and over all that would happen to him leading up to and how he would die. He gave his followers the heads up, the foreshadowing of what to expect in his death and resurrection and he came through! Jesus did exactly what he said he would, he is alive!
Today, remember that Jesus is a man of his word. He is faithful even to the point of death and when he says he’s going to do something, he’s going to do it! We serve a risen king who loves us unconditionally and more than anyone has before. Our Jesus isn’t in a tomb, he’s alive!
