2 Samuel 19:11-20:13
Verse of the day:
All my relatives and I could expect only death from you, my lord, but instead you have honored me by allowing me to eat at your own table! What more can I ask? (1 Samuel 19:28)
Scripture tells us that King David showed kindness to Mephibosheth, the crippled son of his friend Jonathan, and the grandson of King Saul. It was a common practice for a new king to wipe out all the relatives of the previous king. This was done to prevent any of them from trying to reclaim the throne.
David gave Mephibosheth all the lands that had belonged to Saul, ensuring that Mephibosheth and his descendants would always be provided for. In addition, David invited Mephibosheth to eat at the king’s table. This symbolized to everyone that David had accepted Mephibosheth as a member of his own family!
David was called a man after God’s own heart (1 Samuel 13:14). God shows concern for people who are vulnerable. David shared that same concern in his treatment of Mephibosheth. When we care about the same things God cares about we too can be a person after God’s own heart.
