1 Kings 3:3-4:34
Verse of the day:
Then the woman who was the real mother of the living child, and who loved him very much, cried out, “Oh no, my lord! Give her the child—please do not kill him!” (I Kings 3:26)
I remember hearing this story as a young child. I’m not sure how Solomon’s sword wielding antics every received the G-rating for Sunday School, but nevertheless, this was definitely a flannel graph favorite. Two babies—one dead, one alive—accompanied by two prostitutes scrambling for custody.
In the Sunday School version, I think we assumed that these women were friends at some unfortunate sleepover, but they weren’t. These were desperate women with all of the scars and grief to prove it. Another way of wording Solomon’s judgement is with this question: When does the suffering stop?
Both women had suffered greatly—rejection, subjection, and abuse. One woman decides “Let the suffering continue! Let the child die, and let the affliction I’ve suffered continue to someone else.” The other woman decides “Let the suffering end!”
Solomon clearly made a wise decision, but I also believe that a young mother made a wise decision when she chose the love of her child over the vengeance of her past.
Let the suffering stop today.
