1 Samuel 5:1-7:17
Verse of the day:
Who can stand in the presence of the Lord, this holy God? (1 Samuel 6:20)
When we read this verse by itself it’s a verse it sounds like a verse that is worshiping God for His holiness; however the people of Beth Shemesh who are quoted to have said this were more than likely saying this as a complaint. They had just been in a time of celebration over the return of the Ark of the Covenant from the Philistines when suddenly many of their men were struck down dead for their curiosity about the contents inside the Ark. They had allowed their curiosity to get the best of them and had ignored the warnings of the Lord to not look upon the contents of the Ark even for a second or they would surely die. (Numbers 4:20) God could not allow the people He loved so much to ignore his warnings and come into His presence lightly.
Had he overlooked their transgression He would be allowing the cycle of disrespect, disobedience to start all over again in the nation of Israel. God did not kill the men of Beth Shemesh to be cruel; He killed them because overlooking their sin would encourage the whole nation of Israel to ignore God & his commands. When we ignore God and the warnings that He has given us we sever our relationship with Him. Out of His goodness and His mercy He allows for there to be punishment to bring us back to where we need to be. If God did not punish us we would begin to think He was okay with our sin and not realize that our sin was actually separating us from Him. Do you have an area in your life that you aren’t heading the warnings from God found in scripture? Are you in a time of punishment and correction? Don’t be discouraged; remember God gives us His warnings to protect us and He allows for there to be punishment because He loves us. Submit to Him and repent of any area in your life that does not line up with scripture—You will be so glad you did!
