2 Kings 9:14-10:31
Verse of the day:
For as I was walking along I saw your many shrines. And one of your altars had this inscription on it: ‘To an Unknown God.’ This God, whom you worship without knowing, is the one I’m telling you about. (Acts 17:23)
Today’s verse underscores a truth I encountered a few years back. The truth is this: everybody worships. Now this may seem at odds with the growing number of Americans who claim no religious affiliation but we as human beings were created with a need to worship so it’s not possible to worship nothing. In Athens Paul encounters the statue to the ‘Unknown God’ and he goes on to tell the people there that they need to take their worship from this statue to worshipping the one true God, and His name is Jesus. Because of sin, we’re prone to worship anyone and anything other than the God who made everyone and everything. This is what the Bible calls idolatry.
Some will worship their careers. Others will worship their kids. Some will worship a sports team while others will worship money and possessions. Unfortunately I know all too well how easy it is for my heart to drift away from the creator to created things. Today is a great day to reset our affections and worship toward Jesus.
