God's Great Love // Tuesday, August 19

1 Corinthians 12:1-26
Verse of the day:
Your unfailing love, O Lord, is as vast as the heavens; your faithfulness reaches beyond the clouds. (Psalm 36:5)
You can imagine the shock. A young woman picks up her work list for the day. “We need room 114 cleared, disinfected, and reset.” This notice, of course, carried no surprise. The previous occupant was deceased. The room must be transitioned for a new unfortunate guest at the mental hospital. It was in the late 19th Century when a young maid cleared this room and found the following inscription penciled on the wall.
"Could we with ink the ocean fill, and were the skies of parchment made; Were every stalk on earth a quill, and every man a scribe by trade: To write the love of God above would drain the ocean dry, nor could the scroll contain the whole though stretched from sky to sky.”
This quote was eventually traced back to a Jewish poem written in 1050 A.D. It was the mental patient, however, that resurrected this text to the ears of hymn writer, Frederick Lehman. In 1927, Lehman added a few lyrics that seem to fit this psalm as well.
“O love of God, how rich and pure! How measureless and strong! It shall forevermore endure; the saints’ and angels’ song.”
How GREAT is the love of our God!
