The Strength To Be Weak // Friday, August 15
Posted: Friday, August 15
1 Corinthians 9:19-10:13
Verse of the day:
When I am with those who are weak, I share their weakness, for I want to bring the weak to Christ. (1 Corinthians 9:22)
Working with teenagers, I hear a lot about “our freedoms” and “our rights”. We live in a culture today that does what it wants with no thought of the impact on others. Why should I limit myself? Why shouldn’t I watch what I want, say what I want, do what I want?
Jesus’ way is always counter culture. Paul is teaching the people of Corinth that we, as Christians, may have the right to do many different things. However, are we willing to limit our freedoms to ensure the freedoms of others?
So many times I cringe when I see the online postings of Christians enjoying the latest Hollywood hit or taking in a concert at Summer Fest. I wonder how their “freedoms” are affecting others. I wonder how many people have used my poor choices to “give themselves permission” to do something they may not have done otherwise. Am I someone’s excuse?
We need to live our lives strong enough allow ourselves to be limited. I live my life everyday with the knowledge that teens are watching my life, both as a parent and a youth pastor. I will avoid movies, concerts, and even sporting events that are an environment that would cause young Christians to stumble.
Pray today that God will give you the opportunity to allow for someone else’s weakness to be a place for you to exercise strength.
