Boasting in the Lord // Monday, September 8

Isaiah 1:1 - 2:22
2 Corinthians 10:1-18
Verse of the Day:
“But, ‘Let the one who boasts boast in the Lord.’” (2 Corinthians 10: 17)
In 2 Corinthians 10:17 Paul refers to Jeremiah 9:24 when he says, “Let the one who boasts boast in the Lord”. If you’re going to boast about something or someone, boast about the Lord. People boast about a lot of things.
People boast about themselves. Isaiah has something to say about that in chapter 2 verses 12 and 17. Isaiah 2:12 “The Lord Almighty has a day in store for all the proud and lofty, for all that is exalted (and they will be humbled).” Isaiah 2:17 “The arrogance of man will be brought low and human pride humbled; the Lord alone will be exalted in that day.”
People also boast in mankind in general. About that, Isaiah has this to say. Isaiah 2:22 “Stop trusting in mere humans, who have but a breath in their nostrils. Why hold them in esteem?”
People boast about evil and wealth. The Psalmist speaks of these in Psalm 52. Psalm 52:1 “Why do you boast of evil, you mighty hero? Why do you boast all day long, you who are a disgrace in the eyes of God?” Psalm 52:6-7 “The righteous will see and fear; they will laugh at you, saying, ‘Here now is the man who did not make God his stronghold but trusted in his great wealth and grew strong by destroying others!’”
But some boast in their God. Psalm 52:8-9 “But I am like an olive tree flourishing in the house of God; I trust in God’s unfailing love for ever and ever. For what you have done I will always praise you in the presence of your faithful people. And I will hope in your name, for your name is good.” Now that’s boasting in the Lord. How ‘bout you? What are you boasting in? Boast in the Lord!
