Get In Real Close To God
Posted: Tuesday, January 6
Verse of the day:
But I say, love your enemies! Pray for those who persecute you! In that way, you will be acting as true children of your Father in heaven. For he gives his sunlight to both the evil and the good, and he sends rain on the just and the unjust alike. (Matthew 5:44-45)
Children learn to talk, walk, ride a bicycle and catch a baseball from their parents. As a little boy spends time with his parents, he will learn his parents’ values, attitudes, and behaviors. He will learn from his parents just by the fact that he is spending time with them.
As you spend time with God, you will also learn your Heavenly Father’s values, attitudes and behaviors. The more time you spend in God’s presence the more you’ll live for God. Not because you are trying to earn merits by doing good deeds but by the fact that as you are spending time with God, your life starts reflecting His.
The Old Testament commands to love your neighbors (Leviticus 19:18) and hate your enemies (Psalm 139:21-22) intensify, in Matthew 5:44-45, to a command to love your enemies and pray for your persecutors. You are called to love them, because Jesus loves them. Jesus’ love is neither conditional nor exclusive. He died for all. He loves everybody the same.
Get closer to God this year! Spend as much time as you can with Him – pray, meditate in Scripture, and attend church regularly. As you spend time in the presence of the Lord, you’ll be able to love those who are hard to love. Seek the Lord until His values, attitudes and behaviors become yours.
