Leviticus 9:7-10:20
Mark 4:26-5:20
Psalm 37:30-40
Proverbs 10:6-7

Verse of the day:

The disciples were absolutely terrified. "Who is this man?" they asked each other. "Even the wind and waves obey him!" (Mark 4:41)

While Jesus was in Galilee, He led His disciples to cross the Lake of Gennesaret. This lake was about 700 feet below sea level and at its southern end it had a cliff-lined valley. The wind funneling through the surrounding hills and through this valley would cause sudden and violent storms in the lake.

Since Jesus was exhausted after a long day of teaching, He decided to take a nap during the boat ride. While Jesus was sleeping, one of the infamous storms of Lake Gennesaret broke out and the disciples were afraid for their lives. The disciples woke Him and Jesus rebuked and silenced the wind and the waves. By stopping the power of the storm, Jesus showed His divine power and His ability to create peace in nature.

This story comes right after one of Jesus’ famous teachings sessions and this storm was an exam for the disciples. Did they understand Jesus’ teaching clearly? Did they realize that Jesus was more than just a good teacher or prophet? No, they did not. The disciples failed to perceive Jesus' true identity. They were terrified and asked themselves “Who is this man?” They exclaimed “Even the wind and waves obey him!” They were amazed at His authority!

Allow this story to be a gentle reminder to you. It is through life’s storms and trials that you can show what you believe. So, the storms in your life are God-given opportunities to put into practice what you are learning from Him. You can praise Him in the storm! Furthermore, this is a gentle reminder that God is so powerful and mighty that He can create peace in your life even when you can’t feel Him near. Even when you feel scared and alone, He is there with you! One word from Jesus can calm any storm.
