The 5 Most Beautiful Women I Know
Posted: Saturday, March 21
Verse of the day:
As a ring of gold in a swine’s snout, so is a beautiful woman who lacks discretion. (Proverbs 11:22)
Did I mention I hate standing in line at the grocery store? It really has nothing to do with the waiting; it’s the onslaught of Vogue, InStyle, Cosmopolitan and the like. I love to see a copy of Us Weekly turned backwards on the rack as part of some mom’s small act of rebellion. SO . . . I’m making my own list. You may not know these people, so feel free to ignore ‘who’ I think is beautiful and stick with ‘why.’
Mandy Wootton // No big surprise here, but let me tell you about the woman I walked into love with. Mandy worked as a janitor in college for four years. When we first met, her wardrobe was a rainbow assortment of paint-splattered t-shirts, and her perfume was the faint smell of cleaning supplies. I noticed two things: Mandy loved Jesus and the beauty that radiated from her was like nothing I’d ever known. Ten years later, God asked us to move to Milwaukee. The vast majority of women I know would have said, “I’m not moving away from my family,” “I’m not leaving my friends,” or more basically “I refuse to live in Canada!” I adore this beautify God chaser.
Julie Fulcher & Lisa Ulmer // I grew up with these two girls, and until they both married, I was responsible for gas station roses every February 14th. My sisters have always been stylish. It would take fingers and toes to count all of the knock-down drag-out fights over clothing modesty in their teenage years. I believe it. Shopping for modesty and style can be a giant challenge, but consider this invaluable benefit: carnal men usually ignore modest women. The only serious boyfriends Julie or Lisa ever dated are the men they’ve now married. (Seems like a good moment to remind Preston and Tyler: I love you both . . . and if you every become trouble, I will hunt you down hunger-games-style.)
Joy Wootton // My mom is 58-years-old. And yes, I’m aware that many women are now thinking, “I can’t believe he shared his mother’s age!” Here’s why: (and I mean this sincerely) my mom’s beauty increases with every year that passes. I find few things in this world less attractive than the face plate of heavy make-up, the awkward squeeze of inappropriately-aged clothing, or the unnatural results of plastic surgery. Do you want to know what ages well? Grace. Forgiveness. Selflessness. Compassion. I’m convinced that chasing grand babies, traveling the world with her job, and the occasional trip to the hair salon will keep my mom youthful for years to come.
Margie McQueen // This sweet lady lives in Sand Springs, Oklahoma. I honestly don’t know how old she is. (My best guess is somewhere between 42 and 105). Margie was in her late thirties when her first husband died in a plane crash. Her second husband has been in heaven now for almost thirty years. Margie McQueen is one of the most beautiful and vibrant women I’ve ever met. When Mandy and I visit her home, I feel the tangible presence of God sifting through her living room and resting in the words of her counsel. (She also has an amazing collection of Rock Hudson films.)
