Deuteronomy 23:1-25:19 Luke 10:13-37 Psalm 75:1-10 Proverbs 12:12-14
Verse of the day:
One day an expert in religious law stood up to test Jesus by asking him this question: “Teacher, what should I do to inherit eternal life?” (Luke 10:25)
How can someone live forever? This question has been at the root of many myths and legends over the years. People have always tried to find ways to cheat death. Miracle pills, fountains of youth, magic, and even being frozen for future use, mankind has always been in search of a way to prolong their days.
I love the question asked of Jesus. This questions gives us some insight into the mind of the teacher who asked. First, he believed there was a way to have eternal life. Second, he believed it was a gift to be given out. Third, he believed that it was something that God both possessed and had the ability to give.
He was right. Eternal life is a gift from God. Jesus pointed out that we need to simply obey the commands, “You must love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, all your strength, and all your mind.’ And, ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.” (Luke 10:27) If we do both of these things, we will please God with our lives.
You don’t earn an inheritance, it is given because of your relationship to the benefactor. When we love God first and then others as ourselves, we show God that our hearts are where they should be and we will be called the Sons and Daughters of God. Our inheritance flows out of a relationship with the benefactor. Get to know the benefactor today.
