Verse of the day:
Do not add to or subtract from these commands I am giving you. Just obey the commands of the Lord your God that I am giving you. (Deuteronomy 4:2)
It should be pretty simple, shouldn’t it? Just obey. So why do we complicate things?
Moses understood the natural tendencies of people. We don’t do simple very well. We like to complicate things. We like to add our personal feelings or qualifiers to help us to obey. We like to make the hard fast rules a bit softer around the edges. We would rather justify our weaknesses instead of letting Jesus justify our hearts.
Don’t lie. Easy right? Yet how many times do you withhold the truth because you have decided that the truth may wound or injure. Instead of obeying by “speaking the truth in love,” we just lie.
Don’t envy. Easy right? Yet how many times to we think about how it is not fair that someone else has something that we don’t. We deserve better, right?
As Christians, sometimes we make following God harder than it has to be. Let’s keep it simple. Simply obey what the Word of God tells you do. Simply obey what you feel the spirit is leading you to do. Simply obey and don’t add too or take away from the commands of God.
