Pass the Baton
Posted: Thursday, April 23
Verse of the day:
After that whole generation had been gathered to their ancestors, another generation grew up who knew neither the Lord nor what he had done for Israel. (Judges 2:10)
The Christian life is likened to a race in Scripture. 1 Corinthians 9:24 says, “Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one gets the prize? Run in such a way as to get the prize.” Some other verses for you to look at are 1 Corinthians 9:25-27, Hebrews 12:1, Philippians 3:14 and Galatians 5:7. These verses tell us things like run to win, train, focus, set aside things that weigh us down and entangle, press on and don’t let others hinder you.
As you are running your race I would like to encourage you to do one more thing. Pass the baton and pass it often. Relay races often come down to how well the baton was passed. The above verse indicates that the Israelites didn’t hand off the baton to the next generation very well. (Joshua chapter 2:7-12) What a sad verse Judges 2:10 is. A whole generation - lost. We must do a better job of passing on the baton to the next generation or the same could happen in our time.
How do we do that? Pray for those younger than yourself and those who minister to them. Pray for their parents. Tell them about Jesus. Disciple and mentor younger members of the Body of Christ. Pass on the Word to them. Run your race well in front of them. Encourage them in their walk with the Lord. Go ahead and pass the baton and keep running to win.
