One Year Bible Reading Guide:

Ezekiel 12:1-14:11
Hebrews 7:1-17
Psalm 105:37-45
Proverbs 27:3

Verse of the day:

All this happened so they would follow his decrees and obey his instructions. Praise the Lord! (Psalm 105:45)

There’s a gentleman from our church who always responds when asked how he’s doing with, “Abundantly blessed!” I love that! It’s catchy and packs a powerful punch! This man has gone through it too. He’s had highs and he’s had some very low lows. Yet, consistently his response is always, “Abundantly blessed!”

In today’s Psalm, the author goes through the abbreviated history of the Israelites’ vagabond years highlighting the peak moments. He covers their exodus from Egypt with gold and silver, quail provisions, manna, water from rocks, up to the point they take over the promised land. The final verse climaxes to this one captivating point: all of these blessings were given in hopes of obedience.

Even if we’re in the darkest season of our life at this very moment, we like the Israelites have a highlight reel of God’s blessings. We, like my friend from church, are all abundantly blessed. Time and again God has provided, healed, mended, restored, set free, and given hope. And He does this so that we would obey Him. More than anything else we could offer, God wants our hearts. Coming from a Kids Pastor’s mind, it’s like this: You can only have ONE favorite superhero! You can’t have two! It’s either all in for Batman, or you’re all in favor to Superman. You can’t have two favorites. God wants it that way, full obedience to Him. THAT is why he blessed us, why He loves us so tenderly and ferociously. God blesses for our obedience.
