Verse of the Day:

“Then the Lord said to Joshua, Point the spear in your hand toward Ai, for I will hand the town over to you.”  Joshua did as he was commanded… For Joshua kept holding out his spear until everyone who had lived in Ai was completely destroyed.” (Joshua 8:18, 26)

I’ve been on both sides of this one.  There were moments as a kid I’d question something my parents asked me to do and I’d get the “Because I told you so” response, and now I have found myself in certain situations giving that same response.  It usually comes from an annoyance of not having the trust of the person I am asking to complete a task, and on the other side, it came from not having a complete understanding or trust in what I was being asked to do.

Joshua gets the gold star for following seemingly crazy instructions from God.  A few chapters earlier, he had just had the whole army of Israel march around a wall to conquer their enemies, and now he was being asked by God to stand out of the battle, and simply point his spear at the enemy.  I’d imagine that to Joshua, this felt like a relatively meaningless task as they battle played out before him… not to mention… if he was anything like me he would have physically been unable to keep the spear in an elevated position for an extended period of time.

Time after time in the bible, we see what seem like crazy instructions from God that ultimately lead to a great victory for his people if they remain faithful to his instructions.  That by itself is a crucial lesson for us to learn, but what really stands out to me here is the actions of Joshua.  He didn’t require any additional encouragement or explanation from God.  He didn’t whine or complain about what he had to do.  He simply received instruction from God, and trusted his provision that he would take care of their needs and lead them to victory.  What an incredible testimony and example of faith that is laid out before us!  My challenge for myself and you, would be to completely put our trust in God so that we follow wherever he leads no matter how crazy it might seem… simply because he told us so.
