Two for One

Verse of the day:
“But Jesus overheard them and said to Jairus, “Don’t be afraid. Just have faith.”(Mark 5:36)
I love to read the gospel according to Mark. He writes with such action and intensity. He is constantly using words like immediately and suddenly and the people are always stunned or amazed at Jesus.
Today’s reading brings us two acts of faith in one story. Jarius’ daughter is very sick and so he comes to find Jesus. Being an important person, Jarius feels that Jesus should make this errand his priority of the moment. Yet, another act of faith was in the crowd. Jarius was not the only one looking for a touch from the master.
The woman with the issue of bleeding was there as well. Not a prominent leader, because of her issues, she was attempting to get lost in the busyness of Jarius entourage. While Jarius looked for the teacher to come and touch his child, this women only wanted to touch Jesus. She dared not step up and ask for a miracle, she simply needed to touch him.
Suddenly everything stopped as several things happened at once. First Jesus exclaims someone has touched me. At the same time messengers with news of the death of Jarius daughter are pushing through the crowd to tell Jarius the news. Jarius is still leading the way, only to look back and see that Jesus has stopped moving and the crowd was making space around this unclean woman. The woman is on her face, recoiling her hand from the touch, feeling the healing flowing through her body. The disciples are looking around to see who “touched Jesus”. So much is happening.
With all the activity and immediacy of the events, one may overlook the greatest thing that took place. Jarius believed that Jesus could heal, but not raise from the dead. The lady that was as good as dead, knew the power of Jesus would make her whole. Jarius needed the interruption of her faith to prepare him for the crushing blow to his own. He needed to see the woman healed before the news of the death of his daughter arrived. It all happened right on time.
As you go through your day today, know that God is in control of all the details. You may be chasing after Jesus to come and touch your child or you may be chasing for your own special touch. No matter the reason, know that any delay, any distraction may just be another moment to build your faith.
