Away From The Noise

Verse of the day:
“You hide them in the shelter of your presence, safe from those who conspire against them. You shelter them in your presence, far from accusing tongues.” (Psalms 31:20)
As I type today’s devotion, it is one of those cold Wisconsin days where the sun is shining but the wind chill is, well cold. As you sit inside you see the sun and think it is a welcome place of warmth and happiness. Then you open the door and are quickly reminded that sun does not always equal warm. It is on a day like this where all you want to do is escape the wind. If you can find a place where the wind is not blowing, you want to stay in that sheltered place.
Just like the cold north winds of winter, our world of social media and critical “friends” can be just as biting. Words spoken, or typed, can have us feeling the harsh winds and send us running for shelter.
You would think that the Bible would not have anything to say to our culture on the topic of social media. However, the more things change and advance, the more that seem to stay the same. The problems that the Bible addresses are still around today. I guess as long as there are people there will be tension and harsh words. I guess that is why todays Psalm rings so true.
Do you need a shelter from the harassment of negative or harsh words? Do you need to find a place where the bite of criticism or the sting of negative comments are made quiet? Our verse today reminds us that God can hide the hurting in a place of shelter. He can be a wind break that stops the accusing tongues and harassment. Today’s reading does not say he will quiet the mouth of the accuser but that he will provide a place for us away from the Noise.
No matter where you find yourself today, whatever storm is brewing on the horizon, take courage to know that God is with us and he is creating a place of shelter for us. Take a few moments today to quiet yourself before him and let him take you away from the Noise.
