Who Am I

1 Chronicles 16:37-18:17
Verse of the day:
“Then King David went in and sat before the Lord and prayed, “Who am I, O Lord God, and what is my family, that you have brought me this far?” (1 Chronicles 17:16 NLT)
What do you see when you look in the mirror? Do you see someone who is a huge, awesome, success or do you see someone who is a total failing loser? You may not view yourself in either of those two extreme terms but many of us struggle with how we view ourselves. Often we either struggle with pride or with self-loathing. Neither of which is healthy nor honoring to who God has made you to be.
Psalm 139: 14 says, “I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well.” If you struggle with self-esteem you can be encouraged because you are “wonderfully made.” If you struggle with having too much pride you can be reminded that you are “wonderfully made” (emphasis on the MADE). God made you. There is a healthy humility that comes with that realization. Proper perspective looks at ourselves and realizes that everything that we are, and every great accomplishment and success is because of God.
In our verse today that’s where we find David. He could very easily be tempted to become prideful and focus on his accomplishments, but he takes his focus off of himself and puts it on God. He realizes that nothing that he has accomplished could have been done without God’s blessing and help. If you look in the mirror and find yourself struggling with how you view yourself, decide today to take the focus off of yourself and focus it back on the one who made you.
