One Year Bible Reading Guide

Isaiah 1:1-2:22
2 Corinthians 10:1-18
Psalm 52:1-9
Proverbs 22:26-27

 Verse of the day:

“See how Jerusalem, once so faithful, has become a prostitute. Once the home of justice and righteousness, she is now filled with murderers. Once like pure silver, you have become like worthless slag. Once so pure, you are now like watered-down wine.” (Isaiah 1:21-22)

This is a sad storyline that we read over and over in the Bible.  It’s a story of people who were once faithful to God but who are drawn away from serving Him faithfully. While reading through the Old Testament you want to scream at the people “not the Asherah poles again?! Why do they keep putting those up?! O, no, Baal again?! Why do you keep going back to the wrong stuff?!”

How can people who have known God, experienced God, walk away and chase after things that will only hurt them? Well, they do it the same way we walk away from anything, one step at a time. One step away from God, one step toward selfishness. One Step away from God, one step towards more time away fishing. You get the idea.

The faithful are tempted away gradually. How can you tell if you are being tempted away from serving God whole heartedly? Ask yourself where your focus is? Is your focus still 100% on going after God or is your focus being pulled to something else? The warnings of the Old Testament are for us all, even the most faithful can be tempted away. If we keep our focus on pursing God we will be kept safe.
