Led into Temptation
Posted: Sunday, January 3
Verse of the day:
Then Jesus was led by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted there by the devil. (Matthew 4:1)
Temptation often comes when we least expect it. The backdrop for Jesus’ temptation in the wilderness is quite surprising. Jesus has just been baptized by John the Baptist and Matthew 3:16-17 describes the moment:
After his baptism, as Jesus came up out of the water, the heavens were opened and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and settling on him. 17 And a voice from heaven said, “This is my dearly loved Son, who brings me great joy.”
Jesus was in the right place at the right time. His father was greatly pleased with Him, and the very next thing that happens is the Spirit leads him into the wilderness for a season of temptation. Strange, isn’t it?
God doesn’t promote people that He doesn’t test first. Jesus is tempted away from his mission and his relationship with God when Satan dares him to glorify himself with his own powers, dares him to test God, and offers him all the power and pleasures of the world. And there’s more at stake than meets the eye; God’s plan of salvation hangs in the balance as Jesus is tempted.
Today you may be in the right place at the right time, experiencing God’s approval. Be ready because temptation is often right around the corner. Realize that in moments of temptation there is more at stake than we think, but God will always provide a way out.
