Gaining Security And Stability

2 Samuel 13:1-39
Verse of the day:
Your eternal word, O Lord, stands firm in heaven. Your faithfulness extends to every generation, as enduring as the earth you created. (Psalm 119: 89-90)
Have you ever found yourself standing on unstable ground? When I was a kid and my family would go on vacation to somewhere that had a beach one of the things I liked to do was to stand by the edge of the water and let the waves come and wash over my feet. When I would first walk up on the cold, wet, compacted sand the ground would feel firm, and stable. However after standing in the same place for a few minutes letting the water wash over my feet I would soon look down and see that I was sinking! When tested what had seemed like solid ground was not reliable to keep me steady!
The same principle is true when we look for security and stability in other places rather than turning to God. We do this when we trust in people, jobs, our own wisdom, possessions, etc., to bring us security. However at any time one of those things could let us down! People walk out on us or let us down, jobs downsize, our own wisdom often lets us down, and our possessions break! None of these things can be counted on for long-term security.
The only one that we can trust to always be reliable and keep us steady is God! When I think about this truth the old Hymn “My Hope is Built on Nothing less” comes to mind. They lyrics say, “My Hope is built on nothing less than Jesus’ blood and righteousness; I dare not trust the sweetest frame, but wholly lean on Jesus’ name. On Christ, the solid Rock, I stand; All other ground is sinking sand.” If you haven’t heard the song I would recommend looking it up and listening to it in its entirety.
As you look at your own life where are you looking for security and stability? It’s in anything other than God know that you are standing on unstable ground!
