2 Kings 1:1-2:25
Acts 13:42-14:7
Psalm 139:1-24
Proverbs 17:19-21

Verse of the day:

Elijah replied, “If I am a man of God, let fire come down from heaven and destroy you and your fifty men!” And again the fire of God fell from heaven and killed them all. (2 Kings 1:12)

If you haven’t read today’s Old Testament reading, you need pause this devo and do it! It’s nuts! This is one of those crazy cool (and scary) true Bible stories that are just mind blowing.

Here’s the short version. The king gets hurt and instead of going to God to ask for healing, he goes to a fake god. God tells Elijah, a prophet, to confront the king’s messengers about this and say this was naughty. The king doesn't like the message from Elijah and sends 50 soldiers to arrest him. Elijah tells them, “If I am a man of God, let fire come down from heaven and destroy all of you!” Guess what happens? Fire literally falls from heaven and kills them all. This happens again, same scenario, now 100 soldiers killed by fire from the sky. The king sends a third group of soldiers to arrest Elijah but the captain learned not to be dumb. He pleads with Elijah and is spared. The king ends up dying just as Elijah said would happen and then an even crazy story follows.

You read this stuff, with the context that it’s all real life events recorded, and it’s so bizarre that it seems made up. When is the last time you saw fire fall from heaven at someone’s command? I have never seen that, so if you have, kudos!

So what’s the point of this story, the takeaway? First of all, turn to God for everything. Whether it’s problems with health, finances, lack of wisdom, or whatever, ask God for help! No one else can do what He does. Secondly, God is very real. He is not some made up fantastical story or a feel good man-made comforting concept. God is real. God is God. When we live life knowing that He IS real, it changes how we live.

Today, acknowledge the fact that God is real, He is aware, and He is present. If you’re hurting, turn to Him. If you’re tempted to sin, remember the wrath and grace of God. If you’re doing good, thank God that He is in control and that He has blessed you with good times. God is real and He cannot be ignored.
