1 Samuel 17:1-18:4
John 8:21-30
Psalm 111:1-10
Proverbs 15:11

Verse of the day:

David replied to the Philistine, “You come to me with sword, spear, and javelin, but I come to you in the name of the Lord of Heaven’s Armies—the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied. (1 Samuel 17:45 NLT)

David and Goliath is one of the all-time greatest Bible stories and one of my personal favorites. It has a bit of all of the good stuff! No believes David can do it, the underdog defeats the giant, the good guys win, and the hero is boosted to new stature! These are the things that dreams are made of!

The themes we find in David’s story as he fights Goliath are common throughout some of our favorite stories. Rocky, Remember The Titans, The Karate Kid, Batman v Superman! Batman v Superman because Batman was clearly the underdog against Superman and won! We love this theme of the underdog carrying the win because it inspires us to do the same. We feel downtrodden, discouraged, like no one thinks we can accomplish things, and most times we’re right. The secret to David’s success wasn't anything he did or could have done on his own. His secret was that he came in the name of the Lord.

Everyday we’re challenged with situations where the odds are stacked against us. We’re set up to fail. We’re destined to repeat the same mistakes, not meet expectations, and shatter our own goals. But God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and a sound mind. When David walked up to someone three times as big as him, he didn’t do it alone. He came with God’s help, doing this task to bring God glory. If we can remember to ask God for his help and do all we can to bring Him the glory, God will be the secret weapon to make things happen! It’s all about making God look good through the things we do. You can become the achieving underdog when God gets the glory!
