One Year Bible Reading Guide:

Zechariah 14:1-21
Revelation 20:1-15
Psalm 148:1-14
Proverbs 31:8-9

Verse of the day:

Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves; ensure justice for those being crushed.  Yes, speak up for the poor and helpless, and see that they get justice. (Proverbs 31:8-9)

This portion of Proverbs is entitled in my Bible “The sayings of King Lemuel” however in verse one we find out that these “sayings” were actually things that his mother had taught and instilled in him.  Like any good mother she tried to instill values into her son and teach him things that would benefit him all the days of his life. Values like don’t waste your strength chasing women and relationships, don’t get drunk, and speak up for those who are being mistreated or who are poor and struggling.

I think we could all benefit from listening to the wisdom coming from King Lemuel’s mother. If we spend our strength chasing things like relationships and pleasures like alcohol we will end up broken-hearted and in bondage. We find contentment, joy and purpose when we take the focus off our own desires and look to helping those who need help.

In a society that teaches us that we have to fend for ourselves and look out for number one it is a refreshing change of pace to hear the wisdom in God’s Word that reminds us that it’s not all about us.  We can all be an advocate for someone. Who is God laying on your heart to stand up for or to be a voice for?
