Judges 19:1-20:48
John 3:22-4:3
Psalm 104:24-35
Proverbs 14:22-24

Verse of the day:

He must become greater and greater, and I must become less and less. (John 3:30 NLT)

Sooner or later you will have to decrease for others to increase. The process will probably be painful, require humility, and cause great confusion.

This moment arrives for John the Baptist’s disciples in John 3. John and his disciples had been baptizing droves of people out in the wilderness. John was the first real prophet in Israel for 400 years and he was used to bring about real revival. They were in the middle of all that God was doing. And then they weren’t.

Jesus and his disciples moved into the area and all of the sudden the crowd moves away from John and towards Jesus. John 3:26 tells us:

So John’s disciples came to him and said, “Rabbi, the man you met on the other side of the Jordan River, the one you identified as the Messiah, is also baptizing people. And everybody is going to him instead of coming to us.”

Can you hear the panic in their voices? And yet John responds with incredible depth and humility. He says in John 3:29-30

…I am filled with joy at his success. 30 He must become greater and greater, and I must become less and less.

Wow. I hope this is as convicting for you as it is for me!

Whatever roles in ministry and leadership God has entrusted to us, let’s give it our very best. Let’s be faithful servants. But we must not hold onto our role too tightly, because God longs to use other people too. God will choose to bless others too, perhaps seemingly blessing them more than us. A prominent role in the kingdom of God is not the reward; Jesus Christ is our reward.
