Verse of the Day:

And everyone present was filled with the Holy Spirit and began speaking in other languages, as the Holy Spirit gave them this ability. (Acts 2:4)

Can you remember either your earliest or most recent moment of empowerment? A time when you were either spoken to, trusted with, or found the opportunity to do something that required boldness, a bit of edginess, and seizing pure terror in order to accomplish something great? One of my 3 year old daughter’s favorite things to tell us now is that she is brave. When she talks to new people - she’s brave. When she’s balancing on a ledge - she’s brave. Sleeping at night with no lights on - she’s brave. It thrills me when she tells me she’s being brave because for her, it’s a sense of empowerment that emboldens these choices. She once had reservations, now she’s brave because she was empowered.

When we catch up with the followers of Jesus 50 days after he was killed and brought back to life, they are celebrating the Festival of Pentectost, or in Hebrew Shavu'ot. During this holiday, Jews would celebrate the giving of the Ten Commandments and considered it the day the ‘Judiasm’ was born. With God, there’s always a symbolic or intentional reason for why He does what He does, so that the Holy Spirit was gifted on this day is significant! Shavu'ot was considered the culmination of redemption, bringing a close to Passover which celebrated the freedom from Egypt and birth of a nation. Now we celebrate Pentecost as the day the Holy Spirit arrived as our counselor and can be considered the birth of the church into the new age of Christianity.

As we read through the history of these first followers of Jesus, the Holy Spirit emboldened them so much that they did things that they never would have even a year prior. Peter declares Jesus is the Messiah to thousands of people when only two months later he didn’t have the courage to tell a little girl he was Jesus’ friend. When you’re all in with God and He empowers you with His Spirit, it changes things! We are still in full control of our choices, but the same power that raised Christ from the dead is living inside of you! Today, if you’ve been filled with the Holy Spirit, let Him empower you, be brave, and do something that points people towards Jesus today! If you haven’t received this gift, you can spend time asking God for it whenever and wherever! When you desire it purely and God is ready to gift you it, watch out! You got some power in your corner now!
