“And since God gave these Gentiles the same gift he gave us when we believed in the Lord Jesus Christ, who was I to stand in God’s way?”
In elementary school, were you someone who was picked early to join the team or the last man standing? Thankfully for my self esteem I was usually picked early on. Most times not the first person, but within the top 3 rounds. It was always the BEST feeling to be the first pick! That someone valued my skills and wanted me over everyone else - is there a better feeling as a kid? What’s pretty wild is that that method of selection and feelings associated with the whole process don’t end in elementary. A lot of us are dealing with that terror on a regular basis! Will natural selection ever end!?
If you’re reading this and you’re not a Jew, you have Peter and the Holy Spirit to thank for receiving the Gospel. When Jesus left, He instructed His disciples to tell people about Him globally. The thing is, it didn’t start out that way. It started with Jesus’ Jewish followers telling fellow Jews how to become a Christian. Jews associating with anyone that were not Jews (Gentiles)l was so against every custom and cultural practice that there was no way it would naturally happen! Even to set foot in the house of a Gentile (non-Jew) was a very strict no no! Besides, Jews were God’s chosen people. So the new method of salvation exclusively through Jesus was an exclusive Jew thing still, right?
It wasn’t until the Holy Spirit had a life changing encounter with Peter through a vision and display of God’s power within Gentiles that changed all of this. You can get the whole scope of events in Acts 11, but the fact that non Jews were receiving the Baptism in the Holy Spirit and speaking in their Heavenly language was proof enough for Peter that Jesus’ sacrifice was for Jews AND Gentiles. It was global and all inclusive. No more selection, no more only if you follow all of these cultural customs we’ve had for thousands of years, all of that gone through Jesus. Now, anyone can be in the club as long as you ask to join! Who have you invited in recently?
