Proverbs 28:12-13

Verse of the day:

Respect everyone, and love the family of believers. Fear God, and respect the king. (1 Peter 2:17 NLT)

Respect everyone.

Sounds simple, doesn’t it? Truth is, respect isn’t something that comes naturally to us; it is something we must learn. We can be quick to think of reasons why a person isn’t worthy of respect, or how they’ve lost our respect and yet scripture simply teaches us to respect everyone. The context of this verse is a passage about submitting and respecting human authorities. This is very timely.

So what does it look like to respect everyone? Here are a few suggestions:

Recognize every person is made in the image of God

Every person that you will ever lock eyes with is someone who bears the image of God. All people matter to God and there is no person on earth for whom Christ did not die.

Disagree without being disagreeable.

It is quite possible to disagree with others without devaluing, diminishing or demonizing them. Your voice will carry a lot of weight if you can accomplish this.

Believe the best.

It’s easy to judge people before we ever meet them. I Corinthians 13 teaches us to believe the best of everyone; to have an open mind rather than a critical spirit.

Respect everyone. It’s an idea that could change our world.

Happy Thanksgiving everyone!
