One Year Bible Reading Guide:

Ezekiel 35:1-36:38
James 1:1-18
Psalm 116:1-19
Proverbs 27:23-27

Verse of the day:

Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds (James 1:2)

“Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds.” (James 1:2)  My apologies if you are going through something right now.  Not at all what you want to hear, right.  I’ll admit it’s not an easy thing to do.  I think our problem is we are so focused on the here and now.  This verse and the ones that follow try to get us to focus on the future – the finished work, the mature believer and the complete child of God that God wants us to be.  And that happens through trial and perseverance.  James 1:2-4continues.  “…because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance.  Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything.”

Our verse says “…whenever you face trials of many kinds….”  Looking at today’s reading in James there are four kinds of trials there..  The first one is the trial of Belief and it comes from verses 5 through 8.  Choose to believe what God says is true and don’t doubt.  The second one is the trial of Circumstances.  Stand up in any circumstance you find yourself in and trust God.  It is from verses 9 through 11.  The trial of Temptation is the third one and it is found in verses 13 through 15.  When temptation comes, don’t give in to it, but choose to obey God instead.  And finally number four is the trial of Deception and you can find it in verses 16 through 18.  Don’t believe the father of lies.  Choose instead to hold on to the Word of truth and know that good things come from our Father in heaven.

If you were reading along in James as I was listing those verses, you may have noticed I left a verse out. James 1:12 says “Blessed is the one who perseveres under trial because, having stood the test, that person will receive the crown of life that the Lord has promised to those who love him.”  This is our reward for persevering through the trials life or the enemy brings our way - the crown of life.  Focus on that future crown of life and the Savior who purchased it for you and rejoice and persevere until you receive it, then rejoice some more because there will be no more trials.
