Psalm 74:1-23
Proverbs 24:15-16

Verse of the day:

“The godly may trip seven times, but they will get up again. But one disaster is enough to overthrow the wicked.” (Proverbs 24:16 NLT)

People respond to the storms of life in very different ways. For some, it can be the ending of a dating relationship or the loss of a job that leaves them defeated. It’s the ache of failure or having a dream broken that keeps them trapped in discouragement. Then there are others who whether even greater storms: cancer, the loss of a loved one, or divorce. And somehow, with God’s help, they bounce back better than before. They have resiliency in their spirit. Solomon highlights the difference between these groups of people: the godly get up again, while the ungodly remain down.

Scripture describes many benefits to living a godly or righteous life. Passages such as Proverbs 10:6: “Blessings are on the head of the righteous” and Proverbs 15:29: “The Lord … hears the prayer of the righteous” encourage us to live right and reap the rewards. Yet scripture never promises us a trouble-free life.

Proverbs 24:16 tells us that the godly may trip seven times. The number seven in scripture represents completeness. So a godly person may trip up so completely that it appears they have suffered total loss. But the setback isn’t complete at all, for although the godly may trip seven times, they will get up again! The biggest failures for the righteous are never permanent!

The difference between the godly and the ungodly is their resiliency in the storms of life. And at the core, a person becomes righteous because we repent of our sins and accept the righteousness of Christ. So get back up! When we ask God for help and forgiveness a comeback is in the making!
