One Year Bible Reading Guide:

1 Kings 9:1-10:29
Acts 8:14-40
Psalm 130:1-8
Proverbs 17:2-3

Verse of the day:

Fire tests the purity of silver and gold, but the Lord tests the heart. (Proverbs 17:3)

Do you enjoy taking tests? I didn’t think so.

God is a believer in tests and God administers a test to each of us. He’s interested in the condition of my heart and yours. Proverbs tells us that God tests our hearts in the same way that fire tests the purity of silver and gold.

In ancient times a metal craftsman would place both lead and flour into a crucible, which would cause a separation between the lower melting points of each metal. Impurities were usually lighter and had a higher melting point, so they would float to the top and could be easily skimmed off by him. This would be done several times, with the temperature continually being raised, until finally the lead would burn off leaving only the purified metal. The intense heat destroyed or forced to the surface undesirable things but the silver or gold was simply made more pure and more valuable. God works in our lives in much the same way.

Recently I was traveling back to Milwaukee from Texas with Joanie and my two little girls. What should have been 5 hours of travel turned into 29 hours of travel, including 18 hours at the Atlanta airport. Needless to say this was not fun for any of us, and we were surrounded by countless angry travelers taking out their frustrations on airline employees. While standing in a long line to rebook a flight I heard the Holy Spirit whisper ‘this is a test’. I certainly know this won’t be the last test either because there’s still lots of junk in my heart that needs to be melted away. Are you experiencing frustrations, setbacks or betrayals? Remember that God is in control; this is a test.
