Let’s Go Fishing

2 Chronicles 19:1-20:37
Verse of the day:
"Though good advice lies deep within the heart, a person with understanding will draw it out." (Proverbs 20:5 NLT)
Wait. Scratch that. I hate fishing. I love fish . . . when it’s fried at an OCAG fish fry, but I am NOT a fisherman. I think it’s the unpredictable nature that annoys my soul. Spending the day in the hot sun holding a stick over the water is bad enough. The activity continues to loose its luster when the results are so unpredictable. You may catch something, or you may not. You may get to keep it or not. It may be edible or not.
Fishing for good advice is often the same way.
The writer of this proverb describes the challenge of finding good advice—advice that lies ‘deep’ within the heart. It’s not on the surface. It’s not easily accessible. It involves a process of searching, waiting, and evaluating. If you keep the first thing you catch, your stomach may be severely disappointed.
Here’s the question for the day: what is your process for seeking good advice? Is it quick? Is it uncomplicated? Or does it take time? Does is take patience to be drawn out? Some fishing spots are better than others and the same is true for good advice. Seek the Lord. Pray for wisdom. Good advice will be drawn out, and your life will be the better for it.
