September 24 Reading:

Isaiah 43:14-45:10
Ephesians 3:1-21
Psalm 68:1-18
Proverbs 24:1-2

Verse of the day

“Father to the fatherless, defender of widows—this is God, whose dwelling is holy. God places the lonely in families; he sets the prisoners free and gives them joy.” (Psalm 68:5-6 NLT)

We have friends who recently announced an unexpected pregnancy after multiple miscarriages and years of infertility. God is surprising—not because he fulfills his promises, but because of how. In the case of Abraham’s wife, Sarah, she laughed with disbelief and then laughed again with joy. God is the same yesterday, today, and forever. The outcome is predictable, but the pathway is unforeseen.

In the waiting, our friends opened their home to adoption. Parentless children were grafted in just like God has adopted us. “God places the lonely in families,” and this should be our challenge. David took in Mephibosheth because of his love for Jonathan—a close friend with no biological connection. David wasn’t obligated by law. He was obligated by love.

I believe that every 7-year-old and every 70-year-old should consider the possibility that God is not done designing your family. We should become placement specialists always keeping our eyes open and our will in tune with the Holy Spirit. “This is God.” Bringing people into families is the essence of God. It is not what He does. It is WHO He is.
