One Year Bible Reading Guide:

Job 34:1-36:33
2 Corinthians 4:1-12
Psalm 44:1-8
Proverbs 22:10-12

Verse of the day:

Whoever loves a pure heart and gracious speech will have the king as a friend. (Proverbs 22:11)

Whit is entertaining. Bravery is impressive. Brilliance is daunting. Passion is engaging. Quirkiness is refreshing. Determination is productive, and patience can be wonderfully relieving.

Think of every friend that holds influence in your life. All of our friendships are formed from the observation of an admirable quality. (i.e. You find her career ambition inspiring, OR you find his humor entertaining.) These admirable qualities define our friendships. I would argue that we are all ‘unromantically’ attracted to our friends. Like files to a bug light, we see a quality that we desire, and we move closer.

Here’s the unanticipated consequence: some qualities wain over time. Beauty fades. Humor can turn distasteful, and carefreeness can quickly turn into recklessness. The Bible places certain attributes above others—in this case, a pure heart and gracious speech. When we display God-centered qualities, our relationships will continue to deepen. Allow God to be the master of your friendships, and let’s strive to reflect his qualities in everything we do.
