Proverbs 27:18-20

Verse of the day:

As a face is reflected in water, so the heart reflects the real person. (Proverbs 27:19)

We tend to focus on the outside.

We exercise and diet and pretend we like yoga and Pilates. We eat disgusting things like kale while forgoing carbs all so our bodies look good. When we are introduced to someone new one of the first questions is ‘what do you do’? Our jobs and whether we’re successful are very central to our identity. We like to dress well, smell good and look as young and happy as possible.

While there’s something to be said for a flat tummy and a professional appearance scripture advises us to focus on the heart; the soul. Some make a delineation between these two, but for the purpose of this short devotion we are referring to the ‘inside you’.

Your soul is eternal; when your body dies your soul will live on. You can have a healthy body and enjoy success in your career and relationships and still have an unhealthy soul. But if you have a healthy soul, you will begin to see that manifest in every area of your life.

Proverbs 4:23 tells us ‘Guard your heart above all else, for everything you do flows from it.’

Jesus tells us in Matthew 7:18 ‘a good tree cannot bear bad fruit, and a bad tree cannot bear good fruit’. He’s talking about our souls, our hearts; the real us.

How can we lead our souls to be healthy? It begins with our souls being with our creator. Consistently spend time with God each day whether you feel like it or not; whether you feel differently or not. In the not too distant future you’ll feel the benefits of your healthier soul.
