Verse of the day:

Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect. (Matthew 5:48)

On Sunday night, December 20th, the people of our church were treated to 2 wonderful Christmas presentations by our children.  If you were there you might remember one of the lines spoken by one of the child actors.  The line was “Walk this way.”  The person spoken to not only followed him across the stage but took him literally and walked in the same way.  As I read Matthew 5:27-48 I remembered those words, “Walk this way.”  That is what Jesus is saying to us in His Sermon on the Mount.

Jesus uses the words, “You heard it said…” several times in this portion of reading.  Jesus was saying people may have told you this or that but I’ve got a better way.  You may have grown up hearing something, but there’s a better way of doing things.  You may have been taught one way but let me show you the right way.  In some cases he takes what has been said a step further like not commiting adultery and not murdering.  He says don’t even think lustful thoughts or hate someone.  For divorce He gives clarification and says it is only for marital unfaithfulness.  On making oaths he says don’t make them, just keep your word.  Let your yes be yes and your no be no.  On how to treat your enemies, he says to not take revenge against them but love them and go the extra mile.  Even pray for them.

As Christians we are called to live a higher standard than what we’ve heard in the world around us.  As stated in Matthew 5:48 our aim is to follow God as our example, not man or the world.  Jesus wants us to “Walk tHIS Way”.
