1 Corinthians 14:18-40
Verse of the day:
Well, my brothers and sisters, let’s summarize. When you meet together, one will sing, another will teach, another will tell some special revelation God has given, one will speak in tongues, and another will interpret what is said. But everything that is done must strengthen all of you. (1 Corinthians 14:26 NLT)
A basketball team has to work together to set up the perfect shot. Every team member has a specific role to play in accomplishing the goal. Although it may seem as if one player scored the basket, that basket was made possible by many people’s planning, coordination, and cooperation to get that player the ball. In the same way, teamwork is an essential part of the success of a marriage, a family, a church or a community.
This is the main idea of our text today. All spiritual gifts are of equal importance because all were given by God to his people for a purpose. Paul encouraged the Corinthian believers to promote teamwork in their exercise of spiritual gifts during worship services. If someone speaks in tongues during a worship service, then another person, with the gift of interpretation, must interpret the message. When there is teamwork in the exercise of spiritual gifts, the worship service achieves its goal of strengthening, encouraging, and comforting God’s people.
Since the beginning, God intended for life to be a team sport. You were not created to live isolated. God created you to live as part of a team. He gave you certain talents, abilities, and spiritual gifts so that you can help your team achieve its goal.
At the same time, like you, every member of your team has something to contribute. Every member is valuable. Even if some of their talents, abilities, or spiritual gifts work behind the scenes, they still play an important role in helping your team achieve its goal.
A healthy and successful team is the one in which every single member uses his or her gift to achieve the team’s goal.
What teams do you belong to?
Are you using your talents, abilities, and gifts to help your team achieve its goal?
When was the last time you publicly appreciated the contribution of a team member?
