Discipline your children while there is hope.
Otherwise you will ruin their lives.

Proverbs 19:18 (NLT)

Growing up, whenever my parents would discipline me (i.e. spankings), they would say ‘this is going to hurt me more than it’s going to hurt you’. I never believed them! But now that I’m a parent I think they were telling the truth.

I take no joy when moments arise where I have to discipline my daughters. Krista, Morgan and I are buddies and they don’t like me very much when I have to correct them. And my 9 month old son Luke doesn’t like the few times I’ve told him ‘no’. Like any small child they are discovering their limits and I have a moral obligation to teach them what is right and wrong from a Biblical perspective. Truthfully, it would often be easier to look the other way instead of confronting them but that would not be the loving thing to do.

Discipline is not punishment; it is training and directing us to a better future. Discipline is our friend when it comes to diet and exercise. Discipline is our friend when it comes to handling money. Discipline is our friend when it comes to the words we speak. Discipline is our friend when it comes to our thoughts and feelings.  I could go on and on…

"If you're not where you want to be, it may be that you've done too much of what you wanted to do." -Andy Stanley

Discipline is when we ask our kids to do hard things. Discipline is when God asks us to do hard things, and it’s always for our good. Discipline is your friend.
